Scope and Content

Includes two ring binders of newspaper clippings and photographs, predominantly about St George's cinema, York. Also includes photographs of St George's cinema events, and a file of papers relating to Ernest Johnson's war service, as well as one ring binder of newspaper and article cuttings relating to quotations and the cinema profession.

Administrative / Biographical History

These binders were created by Ernest Johnson, formerly the manager of St George's cinema, Castlegate, York during the 1930s and 1940s. In 1937, he was the manager of the Picture House cinema, York. He served in Egypt during WW2 as a RAF flight lieutenant, returning to York in 1946 as manager of St George's cinema, Castlegate, York. He was later assistant manager of Associated Tower cinema, Leeds. He died in York in 1999 aged 88 yrs.

Custodial History

They remained in the custody of Mr Johnson until his death, and then in the custody of his widow, Moyra Johnson until her death in 2012.
