Scope and Content

Correspondence and papers from a folder labelled 'National Science Foundation'.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 'to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defence'. In addition to funding research in the traditional academic areas, the agency has supported more innovative collaborations.

Material includes an application by Kopal to the NSF for funding towards the preparation of a catalogue, 'The Photometric Stars of Eclipsing Binaries'; a discussion around a manuscript, 'Research Frontiers in Fluid Dynamics'; and an NSF memo regarding volumes of the 'Annals of the International Geophysical Year'.
