Marriage Agreement

Scope and Content

(1) Roger Mekin of Manchester, milliner

(2a) Anne Byrom of Manchester, widow, and (2b) Joseph Crompton of Boulton [Bolton], maltster, brother of Anne, and (2c) John Okey of Boulton [Bolton], linen draper (friends entrusted by Anne Byrom)

A marriage was due to take place between (1) and (2a). (2a) is possessed of an estate worth £750, bequeathed to her by her late husband, Edward Byrom of Manchester, deceased, for the use of her and her issue. By virtue of the marriage, (1) will be possessed of the estate. Consideration (paid to the issue of (2a) and Edward Byrom deceased): £30 to Edward Byrom, £10 to Joseph Byrom, £200 to William Byrom and £200 to Ellin Byrom.

Covenants: (1) agrees to pay £100 after (2a)'s decease; (1) agrees to maintain and provide for the education and apprenticeship of (2a)'s issue until they come of age and the conveyance of the old house and lands, about 8 acres in all, at Fallowfield, Manchester, for the use of (1) during his lifetime, then after his decease, to the use of (2a) in lieu of her jointure and dower, then to their issue.
