Administrative / Biographical History

The Narberth Rural District Council was set up under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. It took over the powers of the former Narberth Rural Sanitary Authority, and of the Tenby Highway District. The Rural Sanitary Authority had the same boundaries as the Narberth Poor Law Union, ie, the whole of the area of the later Rural District Council plus various Carmarthenshire parishes. In 1905, part of Narberth civil parish became Narberth Urban District Council. The Rural District Council was merged with Pembroke Rural District Council by the Local Government Act 1972 to form South Pembrokeshire District Council.
