Administrative / Biographical History

Treflan Estate was located at Llanbeblig and Waun-fawr in Caernarfonshire, north Wales. John Evans (1766-1827) was a prominent Caernarfon solicitor with interests which extended beyond his legal practice into local government administration and the slate quarrying industry. Acting on behalf of the Cilgwyn Slate Company he purchased the estate which lay in the vicinity of the company's two quarries. In 1819 the company sold one quarter of the estate to Evans and six years later he took over the remainder. The estate was sold by auction in 1843.
