Papers of Harold Bing, pacifist, 1902-1972

Scope and Content

This small collection reflects Bing's political interests. It includes original correspondence to Constantin Sarantchoff, including four letters from P.A. Kropotkin and a group of 43 letters from Edward Carpenter. There is a series of published material by and about Tolstoy (1928-1972), including miscellaneous prints and photographs, used for lectures. A number of letters and papers concern Vladimir Tchertkoff and his Tolstoy work. Correspondence to Bing is present from Ludwig Perno and fellow members of the War Resisters International. Some copies of One and All: Journal of the National Adult School Union include articles on Tolstoyans in England.

Administrative / Biographical History

Harold F. Bing (d 1975), a native of Croydon, moved to Loughborough, Leicestershire in 1950 to an appointment on the staff of the Co-operative College at Stanford Hall. He was a lifelong pacifist and a founder member of The War Resisters International. His interest in the philosophy of Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) led him to collect material about the writer for use in local lectures and exhibitions. He was closely associated with the Tolstoyan community in England.
