Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl: Copies of Latin inscriptions

The inscriptions are arranged chronologically and include references to printed editions. The versos are blank throughout.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl: Inscriptions

MS.Add.5971: A series of annotated copies of Latin inscriptions, many of them pasted to the pages, with printed matter; 19th century, 141 folios. The inscriptions are written in Ritschl's hand, in German and Latin.

MS.Add.5973: Copies of inscriptions and notes from the Ritschl collection, written in Latin and German, 19th century, 78 folios.

MS.Add.5974: A series of annotated copies of Latin inscriptions, some of which are pasted to the page, with occasional printed matter, 19th century, 200 folios. The inscriptions are in Ritschl's and occasionally other hands, in Latin, German and Italian. Fos 1-10, 42-44, 46-55 and 95-200 are blank.

P. Henn: 'Conspectus Titulorum in Ritscheli Chirographis Descriptorum'

MS.Add.5972: The volume is written in Latin, c. 1850, 302 folios. There are 2083 entries arranged in five columns, containing date, reference and place. On fos 238-284 is an index. Fos 286-301 and many of the earlier leaves are blank, as are most of the versos.

MS.Add.5975: Written in Ritschl's hand, in Latin, 19th century, 145 folios: (fo. 1) F.W. Ritschl, description of coins arranged in alphabetical order; (fo. 26v) F.W. Ritschl, notes and rough index; (fo. 39) list of coins arranged chronologically from Julius Caesar to Johannes I Tzimisces.

Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl: Catalogue of Pamphlets

MS.Add.6285: 'Verzeichniss der Einzelschriften der Ritschlschen Bibliothek', a catalogue of pamphlets, arranged in alphabetical order by authors, in German, 19th century, 122 folios.

Administrative / Biographical History

Friedrich Wilhelm Ritschl (1806-1876), classical scholar, was born on 6 April 1806. He entered Leipzig University in 1825, before transferring to Halle the following year. He began his professional career at Halle, removing thereafter to Breslau, then Bonn, where he founded the school of classical scholarship. He became a professor at Leipzig in 1865, where he died on 9 November 1876. Ritschl was a specialist on Plautus, and produced works on Greek and Roman writers.

Acquisition Information

MSS.Add.5971-5975 and 6285 were purchased with the Ritschl collection, 1878. There is no record of accession for MSS.Add.4012-4018. These volumes were possibly received with the Ritschl collection.
