Papers on Church Affairs

Scope and Content

Frere was, because of his reputation for learning and because of the view of the church which he represented, often called upon to act in an advisory capacity for various committees or groups in the Church of England. With the exception of his work on the Prayer Book Revision and his involvement with the Malines Conversations, the documents for which are listed elsewhere, this group of papers concerns Frere's work in contemporary church affairs. In addition are included some papers illustrating Frere's own work as a priest, including notes for sermons and pamphlets published on matters of topical interest. Not only was Frere active in the affairs of the Church of England but his experience meant that his advice was sought by members of Anglican churches abroad, particularly when they were engaged on liturgical problems.
