Administrative / Biographical History

The Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs was formed in 1968 by the amalgamation of the Association of Supervisory Staffs, Executives and Technicians and the Association of Scientific Workers. Following the amalgamation the union enjoyed a period of unprecedented growth and became the UK's largest union of salaried staff. Whilst the bulk of this growth was due to recruitment, part of it was due to further amalgamations and the union absorbed a number of smaller societies. In 1988 it merged with the Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Section to form Manufacturing, Science, Finance.
