Stone was born in Rochdale on 22 June 1924 and was educated at St Bede's College and the University of Manchester. After qualifying, Stone held junior appointments at Withington Hospital and Halifax Infirmary, and spent a short time in general practice. Stone then joined the Blood Transfusion Service, which he worked for until his death. He worked for eight years at the Manchester Centre, then was deputy director of the North-east Metropolitan Regional Transfusion Centre before becoming deputy director of the Regional Transfusion Centre in Cambridge in 1974. He pioneered new techniques for blood-collection and immunisation. He was a member of the Association of Clinical Pathologists and the Guild of Catholic Doctors. Stone died suddenly on 29 February 1976.
