Morison Watson studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and received his degree in 1867. He was appointed an assistant demonstrator in anatomy at the University before undertaking research in Vienna and Berlin. In 1874 he was elected professor of anatomy at Owens College, Manchester, the first holder of this post. Much of his research interest was in the anatomy of animals, particularly penguins.
