Whitehouse studied medicine at London and Cambridge, qualifying in 1963. Whitehouse held house appointments and was medical officer to the Zambia Flying Doctor Service before working as a general practitioner in Lewes, Sussex, from 1969. In 1978, Whitehouse came to Manchester as general practitioner and lecturer in general practice at the University, and later became professor. Whitehouse became a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1987 and was a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
