Wells graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1916. She was in practice in Chorlton-on-Medlock, Manchester and was a honorary physician at Manchester Babies' Hospital. She was appointed police surgeon in 1927, and was at the time the only woman in Europe to hold that office. Wells was a member of the Manchester Medical Society.
