Joseph Ransome was the son of John Ransome and the father of Arthur Ransome. He studied medicine at Manchester Royal School of Medicine and qualified in 1827. He succeeded his father as lecturer ins surgery at the School in 1837. He was honorary surgeon at MRI from 1843-66 and was a former surgeon at the Ardwick and Ancoats Dispensary.
