Young studied medicine at Owens College Manchester and the University of Edinburgh. He worked in public health as medical officer of health for Brighouse, Crewe, Stockport, Marylebone, London and finally as medical officer of health for Cheshire. Young published a number of papers on his specialism including the treatment of smallpox, treatment of throat infections, and the teaching of the mentally sub-normal.
