Thornley was a general practitioner in Oldham Street, Manchester and later practised as a surgeon in Newton Heath. He was the father of James Smale Thornley. According to Mrs Linneaus Banks in 1879, her father's blindness was partly caused by the 'unskilfulness' of Thornley.
