Watson graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester in 1944. He was a consultant paediatrician at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, St Mary's Hospital and Wythenshawe Hospitals, Manchester, and was a honorary lecturer at the University of Manchester. Watson specialised in cardiology and promoted open heart surgery for children. He also published papers on a variety of disorders and discovered Watson's syndrome, a disorder characterized by pulmonary stenosis, cafè-au-lait spots, and dull intelligence.
