Walker originally worked as a teacher. He later took a BSc from the University of London and entered Owens College Medical School in Manchester, qualifying in 1901. He held posts at MRI and Manchester Southern Hospital, and at the time of his death aged 37 he was resident medical officer to the Manchester workhouse schools in Swinton..
