Tomlinson was a surgeon in Brazennose Street, Manchester in the early nineteenth century and was also known as a collector of books and art. He was pupil and physicians clerk at MRI from 1786 to 1789, and from 1790 was surgeon to the Manchester and Salford Lying-in Hospital, of which he was also member of the Medical Committee. He died on 19 November 1826 aged 62.
