Ramsbottom studied medicine at the University of Manchester and took the conjoint diploma in 1906. He later tool a DPH and B.Sc in public health from the University, and a MD from London University. He was a former research fellow in public health and demonstrator in bacteriology at the University's Public Health laboratory. He was a senior clinical TB officer for Salford Council.
