Rayner studied medicine at Owens College, graduating in 1901. In 1907 he was appointed RSO at MRI and he moved to RMCH in 1910. In 1911 he was appointed honorary assistant surgeon at MRI. He remained on the staff of the Hospital until 1944. Rayner enjoyed a considerable reputation both as a diagnostician and a surgical operator.
