Young graduated from Edinburgh University in 1927. He worked for several years in the West African Medical Service before returning to Britain, where he established a practice in Leigh, Lancashire in 1932. He was a tutor in obstetrics at the University of Manchester for several years and wrote The history of the Caesarean section (1944) and a history of St. Mary's Hospital, Manchester.
