Scope and Content

The Committee was set to supervise the management of the Whitworth Art Gallery, following its transfer to University ownership in 1958. The Gallery was founded in 1889 from the legacy of the Manchester industrialist, Joseph Whitworth. The Committee included representatives from local authorities and the Director of Manchester City Art Galleries.

The Committee had a house committee, whose minutes are included with these records.
