Beswick studied medicine at Cambridge University and St. Thomas's Hospital, London; he qualified in 1946. He worked at Cambridge University and for the Medical Research Council. In 1962 he was appointed reader in virology at the University of Manchester, and consultant virologist at UMH. He was promoted to professor of virology in 1967. He was an expert in the poliomyelitis vaccine.
