Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Darbey was resident apothecary at MRI from 1765-1787, and also performed duties of house surgeon. In 1790 he took his MD from the University of Glasgow, and became physician at the MRI, becoming a full physician in the following year. He retired from practice in 1795, and died in the following year. Darbey believed in the medicinal qualities of cod liver oil, and in 1783 he was involved in a dispute with Dr Wright, an Infirmary physician, after being accused of exceeding his duties.
