Crawshaw qualified from Manchester in 1900, and took the diploma in public health in 1905. He was later in general practice at Ramsbottom, Lancashire, and was a medical officer for the Ramsbottom district of the Bury Union. Crawshaw's father, Benjamin Crawshaw (d 1931) was a general practitioner for about fifty years in Ramsbottom.
