Crawford qualified from Queen's University, Belfast in 1918; he took the diploma in public health from Manchester in the following year. He worked at Newcastle and in east London, before becoming bacteriologist to the City of Salford and pathologist at Hope Hospital Salford in 1927. He was appointed group pathologist for the Salford Hospitals in 1948.
