After training in Leeds Arthy held house positions at Leeds General Infirmary and Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary, before becoming anaesthetist at the Royal Dental Hospital, Manchester, and honorary surgeon at Chorlton-on-Medlock Dispensary.
