The Alexander family included a number of surgeons and physicians based in Halifax and Wakefield in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Medics in the family included John Alexander, b 1731 physician Disney Alexander, 1769-1844, William Alexander, b 1763 and Edward Alexander, d [182-?]. Leech was particularly interested in Disney Alexander and John Alexander who were some of the founders of the Manchester Children's Hospital in 1831. John Alexander was physician to Manchester Children's Hospital from its foundation in 1827 until 1853 and was a founding member of Manchester Medical Society . Gervase Alexander, who was either John's brother or son, was consulting physician at General Dispensary for Children, Cross St.(which later became Pendlebury Children's Hospital) in the 1840s.
