Knox qualified from Queen's University. Belfast. He later spent time as a ship's surgeon, before taking a post at Rochdale Infirmary. He worked as an orthopaedic surgeon at the Infirmary until 1949, when he became medical officer at Turner and Newall Ltd. He retired from the company in 1968. Knox as involved with research on the effects of asbestos on textile workers, and was a founder member of the Asbestosis Research Council in 1958, and he also served on the Medical Inspector of Factories Advisory Panel on Asbestos .
