Melland was born in Manchester in 1864, the second son of Frederick Melland. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Owens College Manchester, where he was physiology scholar. Melland held resident appointments at MRI and Manchester Children's Hospital, but due to repeated attacks of rheumatism decided to go abroad. He practiced for ten years in Grand Canary, later returning to settle in practice in Bowdon. He introduced a popular method for treating asthma attacks with an injection of adrenalin. Melland died at his home in Bowdon on 14 November 1929.
