Ferdinand Hillman was born Ferdinand Jellinek at Vienna in 1914. He studied at Vienna University until 1938. He served initially with French forces and then with the British Army during the Second World War in the Intelligence Corps. Following his move to the UK, he completed his medical studies at Queen's University, Belfast in 1950. He was a consultant pathologist at Wigan Royal Infirmary.and Wrightngton Hospital. He was a founder member of the British Society for Clinical Cytology.
