Scope and Content

Papers of the Manchester doctor, John Webster Bride (1884-1963), University of Manchester lecturer and hospital consultant surgeon. There are also some papers of his father, John Bride, a general practitioner.

J W Bride's papers comprise primarily correspondence and drafts of articles and lectures. There are drafts and texts of articles and lectures he delivered, as well as a large file of reports on individual medical cases, possibly intended to accompany slide presentations, although the slide transparencies are not present. His correspondence includes C.V.s, testimonials and job applications, and a file of general correspondence dating from 1935-1949. This includes some medical reports prepared for legal cases. There is a file relating to his support for fund-raising by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and one relating to material from local hospitals, especially the Manchester Northern Hospital, of whose Friends Committee he was a member.

The papers of John Bride include an undated book with notes on medical topics, and his Midwifery Records between 1865-1895, relating to the area around Wilmslow, Cheshire. There is also a collection of notes on specific medical cases, possibly intended for publication, and some testimonials.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Webster Bride was the son of John Bride, a GP in Wilmslow. He was educated at Epsom College, and the University of Manchester. He graduated in medicine at Manchester in 1907. He later received a MD degree from the University of London in 1911 and same degree from the University of Manchester in 1919.

After war service in the RAMC, Bride worked at St Mary's Hospitals, Manchester and was appointed a consultant surgeon in 1921. Bride was also honorary gynaecologist at Manchester Northern Hospital, and, after the creation of the NHS, he was a consultant gynaecologist for United Manchester Hospitals. Bride lectured in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University of Manchester, and was also interested in local medical history; he wrote A short history of St. Mary's Hospitals (1922). He was a member of Manchester Medical Society and a former president of the North of England Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. J W Bride died in 1963.
