Scope and Content

The Society, usually known as the 'Lit & Phil", is Manchester's oldest learned society. The file includes correspondence re the Vice-Chancellor's membership and invitations to events and lectures, including a meeting in 1944 to commemorate the centenary of the death of John Dalton. Other topics include temporary accommodation for the Society following the destruction of its offices in an air-raid, opening of the new offices in 1959 (occupied until 1980), Professor Richmond's Courtauld lecture on molecular biology in 1982,
