Scope and Content

Papers relating to the relationship between the University authorities and the Women's Union (until the 1960s, women students at Manchester maintained a separate union, with their own premises in the main Union building). The papers concern the nature of the relationships between the Union and the University, relations with the Men's Union (which were often difficult), the golden jubilee of the Union in 1949, and use of social and dining facilities.

The file was originally located in the vice-chancellor's ceremonial file series (now VCA/8), although it is clear from the subject matter that it belongs in the main series of vice-chancellor's files. Women's Union records form part of the Students Union Archive ( SUA.
