The Department of Geology dates from the 1870s when William Boyd Dawkins was elected to a chair. By the 1960s there were three chairs in this discipline area: geology, geochemistry and petrology. Most of the file deals with routine administrative matters, including postgraduate training in geochemistry, the work of the research group in experimental petrology, and correspondence with Royal Society over funding of the Royal Society Research Professorship held by W.S. Fyfe.
