Scope and Content

The Pollution Research Unit was reconstituted as a joint University/UMIST body in 1973, having previously been funded externally. The Unit undertook both research and consultancy work on atmospheric and water pollution, and waste control. The Unit was headed by a Director and supervised by a committee of Senate. In 1978, the Unit was physically divided between the University and UMIST, with the UMIST section gradually becoming more significant. As a result of the Willmott Report, the University part of the PRU was incorporated into the Department of the Environmental biology of the School of Biological Sciences in 1986.
