Scope and Content

File relating to the Department of Town and Country Planning. The Department was part of the Faculty of Arts and enjoyed close relations with the Department of Architecture. Subjects covered include: a planned diploma in landscape design and discussions with Institute of Landscape Architects re. accreditation; visits of the Town Planning Institute in relation to recognition of degrees; planning for the 1967 UGC quinquennial submission, including plans to expand postgraduate work; the Sharp Report (1971) which recommended creating centre of excellence in universities for particular types of planning; Manchester lobbied unsuccessfully to become such a centre for environmental planning.

There is also a discrete file of material on the commissioning and erection of a sculpture Ra by Barbara Hepworth in memory of A H Allman, a former chair of the University's Gardens Committee.
