Scope and Content

File relating to the University's Air Squadron. The UAS provided military training for University students, with some UAS members later pursuing a career in the R.A.F. The Squadron was supported by the Air Ministry (later the Ministry of Defence) and the R.A.F. The file includes copies of the Squadron's annual and half-yearly reports, correspondence relating to appointments of the Squadron commander (a serving R.A.F. officer), social events and competitions. There is also correspondence with the Air Ministry concerning the general role of the university squadrons in light of defence reviews, including an exchange of letters between Air Marshal Sir High Constantine and the vice-chancellor, July 1960, in which latter outlines his views on why more Squadron members did not join the R.A.F on graduation.
