Scope and Content

Papers concerning the Department of General Practice, part of the Faculty of Medicine. The University had undertaken research work in the area of medical general practice since the establishment of the Darbishire Medical Centre in 1954 [VCA/7/402]. In 1968, Patrick Byrne (1913-1980) had been appointed director of this Department, and in 1972 was made the first professor of general practice in England. The file contains papers on the development of this subject, including a detailed memorandum by Byrne "Proposed Department of General Practice" (1966), a report of the Committee on General Practice (1967) concerning future teaching, a memorandum by Byrne, "Postgraduate training for general practice in the Manchester region" (1968), and the extension of undergraduate training. There is also material on the administrative rearrangement of Darbishire House, and the establishment of the Robert Platt Health Centre, Withington, another medical centre which combined the teaching of general practice in addition to normal medical services.
