Papers relating to the administration of war reservation system during the Second World War. University staff in certain occupations and within certain age limits were exempted from call-up under the National Service Acts. The file deals with the routine application of the system at the University, and includes University and government circulars as well as correspondence with the Ministry of Labour and National Service, the University Grants Committee and the Universities Bureau of the British Empire. The application of the system to particular occupations, such as teaching staff, library staff and laboratory assistants, is covered, and there are also papers relating to the registration of students for National Service. The file covers staff service in the Home Guard, and includes a few letters of complaint about the system. There is also material on the registration conditions for women students, including the informal quota for women admitted to University courses during wartime, service in the Women's Auxiliary Service.
