Scope and Content

Papers of the Joint Committee on the Grading Scheme, established in 1935 to investigate the salaries and employment conditions of non-professorial staff. It concentrated particularly on the position of assistant lecturers, who faced insecure tenure (their appointments being made for only three years in the first instance and with no guarantee of being promoted to lectureships). The file contains memoranda relating to various aspects of the Grading Scheme, minutes of the Joint Committee and papers concerning the remuneration policies of other UK universities.
