Scope and Content

The subject matter of the file is mostly bound up with funding and staffing problems in light of financial economies in the 1980s. It includes a paper by the then head of department Professor Ian Douglas, "From crisis to disaster" (1990); the possible use of residual GMC funds for subject-related research; the department's involvement in the Hulme Regeneration Project; the development of an ESRC-funded Regional Research Laboratory, "Urban Research and Policy Evaluation" , with University of Liverpool, and the opening of the Geographical Information System Laboratory (1987).
