Scope and Content

File relating to the Department of Adult Education. The Department was set up in 1949, with professor Ross Waller appointed to the chair in adult education. The Department's remit was with the theory and practice of adult education, rather than the direct provision of continuing education courses, which remained the responsibility of the Extra-Mural Department.

Subjects covered in this file include: demarcation issues between the extra-mural and adult education departments; research work on community education; plans for a regional institute of adult education (1966); the Department's evidence to the Russell Committee on Adult Education (1970), and its response to the Russell report; plans for second chair in adult education; a planned centre for broadcasting and journalism studies (1973); a proposed Institute of Adult Studies incorporating EMD and Adult Education (1972); accommodation issues; a proposed training course in adult education for graduates, and a discrete folder on the Joint Liaison Committee for Adult Education which included representatives from Manchester Education Committee and the University.
