Scope and Content

Correspondence between the vice-chancellor and the librarian of the John Rylands Library. The Library was an independent foundation from 1900 to 1972, when it merged with the University of Manchester Library to form the John Rylands University Library of Manchester. However, the University had always enjoyed close relations with the Library, with the vice-chancellor serving as a governor of the Library; the Library also received financial assistance from the University. The correspondence covers a wide range of subjects including items on the Library building, finances of the Library including investments and insurance, holdings of books and manuscripts, appeals, gifts and legacies, visits to the Library by dignitaries, staffing arrangement including superannuation.
