Charles Hatchett was born in 1765. He was an amateur chemist and mineralogist and the author of a treatise on the spikenard 'Nardus Indica', entitled 'On the Spikenard of the Ancients' (1836). In 1819 Hatchett was appointed a member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Saint Petersburg and in 1823 was appointed a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences.

This collection forms part of the Royal Institution of South Wales Collection and was transferred from the Archives at University of Wales Swansea to West Glamorgan Archive Service in April 2004.
