The Institute for the Study of Animal Behaviour was established on 13th March 1936 to promote the study of animal behaviour, to encourage the undertaking of research into animal
behaviour and the publication of the results of research, and to carry on such further activities as may
from time to time be held to forward these objectives. Its principal activity was the publication of
a new journal The Bulletin of Animal Behaviour, the first issue of which appeared in October 1938. The
founders of the Institute included Julian Huxley (first Chairman), F.B. Kirkman, R.C. Oldfield, J.C.
Flgel, G.C. Grindley, C.F.A. Pantin, E.S. Russell, B.P. Wiesner, and Solly Zuckerman. This group
constituted the first Council of the Institute. Others involved in its establishment were J.W.B. (James)
Douglas, H.G. (Gwyn) Vevers, and James Fisher, all of whom contributed papers to the first issue of the
Bulletin. In 1950 the Institute changed its name to the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.
The Bulletin was superseded in 1953 by the British Journal of Animal Behaviour. By 1950 Solly Zuckerman
had ceased to be actively involved but retained his membership.
File SZ/BAB/1 contains memoranda and drafts and final texts of constitutional documents. Much of File
SZ/BAB/2 is taken up with launching the Bulletin. File SZ/BAB/4 consists of typescripts and manuscripts
of papers submitted for publication, proofs, a set of vol.1 of the Bulletin (four numbers published between
October 1938 and October 1944), copies of no. 5 (December 1947, the next issue to be published), no. 8
(June 1950), no. 9 (March 1951), and a copy of the second issue of the British Journal of Animal Behaviour
(vol.1, no.2, April 1953).
