H Forsyth Hardy (1910-1994) was born in Bathgate,
West Lothian and educated at Bathgate Academy. He became the first film critic
of the Scotsman in
1929. He was
one of the founders of the Edinburgh International Film Festival in
1947. After a
period of 15 years in the Scottish Office working on film production, he became
Director of Films of Scotland (1955) and over a period of 20 years raised the finance for
150 films. Following his retirement in
1975, Hardy
went on to write several texts on
John Grierson (1898-1972) and Scottish film. He
was an accomplished broadcaster and speaker and was appointed an OBE.
