Preparatory and final artwork by Sarah Garland for 'Going Swimming' (Bodley Head, 1990). The series contains sketchbooks, a complete dummy and a complete suite of finished artwork for the book.
Three sketchbooks containing rough pencil sketches by Sarah Garland for 'Going Swimming'. One of the sketchbooks is labelled to indicate that the sketches were taken from life, at Cirencester swimming pool, but it seems likely that the sketches in all three books were taken from life. Two of the sketchbooks contain material relating to other subjects, not just 'Going Swimming'.
Spiral-bound A6 sketchbook containing rough pencil sketches by Sarah Garland for 'Going Swimming'. The early pages of the sketchbook feature material which does not relate to 'Going Swimming', including ink sketches of people and birds; watercolour landscape sketches; and numerous pencil sketches of Sarah Garland's dog. The sketches for 'Going Swimming' appear in the latter pages of the sketchbook. The notebook also includes some brief notes, which appear to be for works of fiction but do not relate to 'Going Swimming'.
Spiral-bound A6 sketchbook labelled on the cover in Sarah Garland's hand 'Sketches for Going Swimming - Cirencester Pool'. The sketchbook contains pencil sketches of adults and children which were taken from life at Garland's local swimming pool.
A4 layout pad containing pencil sketches of adults and children at a swimming pool, used by Sarah Garland for 'Going Swimming'. The swimming sketches take up the early pages of the pad, with the latter pages featuring sketches of children. These sketches of children were taken from life at a playgroup Garland visited in London, and were used for characters in her later picture book 'Billy and Belle'. The children sketched are from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, and their names are recorded next to each drawing.
For other material relating to 'Billy and Belle', including correspondence and finished artwork, see series SG/02.
Full-colour dummy version of 'Going Swimming' by Sarah Garland, featuring rough watercolour and pencil illustrations and rmanuscript text. Many of the pages bear pencil annotations in Garland's hand, noting changes or further details which need to be included. The dummy has been made by pasting single sheets of paper together, and significant discolouration has been caused to some of the pages by the glue used. Also included in the file is a watercolour rough for the cover of the Puffin edition of the book.
Complete suite of finished artwork by Sarah Garland for 'Going Swimming'. The artwork consists of 16 double-page spreads, executed in watercolour and ink.

Small file of correspondence relating to 'Billy and Belle' by Sarah Garland. The majority of the correspondence relates to the Picture Puffin edition of the book, but the file does include one letter from Judy Taylor at Reinhardt Books relating to the first edition.
The file also includes one letter from Sarah Garland sent to Sarah Lawrance, Collection Director at Seven Stories, when the artwork was donated in 2010. This letter records some of the difficulties Garland met with from the sales and publicity departments at Reinhardt Books when the first edition was published. These difficulties related to the appearance of a mixed race couple in the book, in particular the front endpaper illustration which shows the couple asleep together in bed. This letter is included because Garland was unable to find any of the correspondence with the publisher which documented these difficulties, which she had intended to include with the donation.
Two pieces of preliminary artwork by Sarah Garland for 'Billy and Belle'. Contains an early cover rough in watercolour and ink, which bears the alternative title 'Billy and Pearl', and an alternative version of the double-page illustration on pages 8-9, in black ink. A pencil note in the bottom-left corner of this alternative illustration reads 'I remember broken frame'.

Card folder in which the finished artwork for 'Billy and Belle' was originally stored. The folder has the book's title written on the front in red felt-tip pen, and also has an overlay taped to it which appears to be for the cover of the book. The overlay is marked up with the page dimensions for the front cover, and has printed text for the title, author and publisher pasted into position on the page. This overlay has been damaged, with a large tear running through the centre of the top half, and it is not clear when or why it was taped to the folder.
