Rupert England was born in 1878 in Yorkshire, England and was educated at Hull Grammar School. He was the First Officer of the
Morning on the British relief expeditions, 1902-1903 and 1903-1904, organized to assist the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott) in McMurdo Sound. He then went to Nigeria for 12 months. Between 1907 and 1908, England was the captain of Nimrod on the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909 (leader Ernest Henry Shackleton), but was dismissed after the first year. On his return, he married, left the sea and founded his own business. He served in the First World War and retired as Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. He died in 1942.
The collection comprises of correspondence relating to the British Relief Expeditions, 1902-1903-1904 to the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 and the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909 (leader Ernest Henry Shackleton).
The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by recipient.

The correspondence covers the British Relief Expedition to the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scott and the British Antarctic Expedition, 1907-1909 (leader Ernest Henry Shackleton), This expedition sailed south on board
Nimrod. A shore party of 15 set up base on the Antarctic continent; they discovered nearly 500km of the Transantarctic Mountains flanking the Ross Ice Shelf. A party climbed Mount Erebus (3794 m), Ross Island. A southern party consisting of Shackleton, Jameson Adams, Eric Marshall and Frank Wild found a route up the Beardmore Glacier and sledged to within 180km of the pole.
A second party sledged to he region of the South Magnetic pole and exploration of the area around the Ferrar Glacier was also conducted.
